Exercise, Nutrition, Motivation, And All Things Fitness!

The Past Becomes The Future!

Before I became the manager of Gold’s Gym I spent six years working in a health food store and I loved it!  In fact, even though I was hired to work full-time at the gym, I still worked weekends in the store for another 6 months.  I was not a very good salesman from a straight profits standpoint.  I distinctly remember times when people would come up to the register with items in hand, then after a conversation I would sell them something less costly.  It was all about helping them make the right choice.  I figured that in the long run, if they liked and got good results from what they bought, they would be more likely to come back and buy it again.  Most of the time this worked, sometimes it didn’t, but I felt good about doing it that way.  Fortunately my boss Pat, who was the store’s owner, saw things the same way.  My main concern was helping people make the right fitness decision for them.

It wasn’t long before people would come to the store specifically looking to have me help them.  They seemed to be very appreciative of my assistance.  That’s why I loved the job!  Through interacting with people, hearing their stories, and learning their challenges, I was able to use the information I had available to help them solve their problems.  It didn’t affect my hourly pay at all but it was certainly rewarding.  In fact, it got to the point where if I wasn’t there people would call me at home (or Gold’s Gym) to ask me questions about diet, training, and supplements.  Not only did I not mind, I actually enjoyed it.  I would easily talk to someone for an hour just because it was fun and we both valued the conversation.

I began to realize that it was difficult to cover and include everything that could be helpful in one conversation. Plus, how were they going to remember exactly what I had told them?  I began to write down what I thought were the answers to the most important questions that people wanted/needed to know.  I made a handout Q & A information sheet so that people could take it with them or use it when I wasn’t there.  As those sheets grew longer and longer, I set out to re-write them in a more organized fashion.  That’s actually how I wrote my book The Diet That Works.  It was my attempt to answer every diet and fitness question people continued to struggle with.  Understandably, the more information I shared the more I desired to learn.  I absorbed everything I could and completed my first two fitness training certifications and a performance nutrition certification just for the experience. (I’ve added several more certifications since then).

Around the same time I began to give fitness and nutrition seminars at the health food store for free.  I realized that instead of talking to one person at a time, bringing them all together in a group would not only be more time efficient, but a lot of fun.  Wow, was I right!  It was tremendously enjoyable sharing information and stories and meeting new people during those seminars.  Ultimately I began to give seminars at other locations including Gold’s Gyms, 24 hour Fitness, Max Muscle, Studio Kicks, Ernie Reyes’ West Coast Martial Arts, and companies like IBM, KLA-Tencor, Intersil, Reynolds Electronics, etc.  What had started out as a passion had evolved into something that I was being paid to do.

As much information as I tried to give during a seminar, I discovered that people often wanted more.  I soon developed an 8-week fitness, nutrition, and motivation course that I taught for one hour each week at various locations.  I used my book as a base and augmented it by writing some additional new material.  Each week I would lecture on a different  topic and over the course of the class I pretty much covered anything and everything that was related to fitness on a number of levels.  I taught this class at private gyms, businesses, medical offices, and I even trained and had other coaches teach them in their local areas.   This information I ultimately put into a multi-media video based course to make it available worldwide for half the cost.  That’s how The Physique Improvement Course was born.

As I continue a push towards new and bigger challenges I’ve learned that sometimes as we move forward we leave behind things that we never intended to.  So I am very pleased that I am in the process of organizing and scheduling a number of fitness seminars, hoping to make many, if not all of them free!  There is a value in giving and sharing that I hope to never lose sight of and would encourage others to explore.  Of course I will keep you updated and informed as the plans become finalized and the dates and locations are confirmed.

I hope to see you out there!
