When I set out to bring the Pulln4you charity Strongman event to South Bay Strength Company, I had the best intentions and highest hopes that I could create something amazing for the athletes and fans in SoCal. I never expected that this inaugural event would end up being so much more.
I’ve met some wonderful people and made some friends as well. Everyone has been amazing and receptive to the vision I have to use the sport of Strongman to generate awareness and support for those who are or have been impacted by the battle we know as cancer.
At the SoCal event, I met one young man in particular, Joseph Mays. He competed with such drive, focus, intensity, and passion. This young man was unstoppable on the battlefield and won! He approached me after the event was over, and opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. I could see the pain in his eyes as he stretched out his hand to shake mine. I hugged him and at that moment, I was moved to my very soul. He walked away without me ever hearing what he wanted to say.
I reached out to Joseph because something so moving shouldn’t be let go. He humbly told me his story wasn’t particularly special but that he had lost his mother to cancer in 2017. He’d watched helplessly as his beautiful, strong mother fought hard but eventually succumbed to her illness. I have no doubt that Joseph’s mother would have been extremely proud to watch him compete and win this year’s Pulln4you SoCal event. So, Joseph Mays, we salute you! Your story is special.
